from wikiHow – The How to Manual That You Can Edit

Getting a college scholarship is easier than most students and parents think. A little planning and research can help to pay for the education that you deserve without having to pay anything back.

Steps

Research. The earlier you start researching, the more options you’ll have. And also note that a lot of scholarships have deadlines early in the fall of your senior year.

Read the requirements very carefully and often. Contact the sponsors for questions or application assistance.

Get all materials. Almost every scholarship has these, so make sure you have them:

Transcripts

Test Scores

Financial Aid Forms

Financial Information, w/tax returns

Scholarship Forms

Essays or SOP

Letters of Recommendation

Proof of Eligibility

Others requested by the sponsor

You may have an interview.

Complete your applications. Get a Letter of Recommendation, which focuses on your abilities, work, grades, community service, talents, and so on. Allow them 2-3 weeks and make sure they sign it. Then write up your essays. These are the most intensive and difficult, but keep writing until you have a good Final Draft. Follow the directions carefully.

Proofread the applications. Check the spelling and grammar and ask some friends and family to read it. Then ask for ideas and thoughts. Complete the application fully and don’t go over the length limit!

Make sure it’s legible. Type or print it. Then sign and date each thing.

Make copies. If you lose your documents, then at least you can send in your copies.

Make a nice and clean application folder. This would impress the sponsors and leaves an impression that you’re organized.

Arrange the documents in order. If you’re sending a printed application, put in order as to what’s described in the form. If you’re sending an online application, send it in PDF format.

Get your application in early. Turn them in all together. If it isn’t complete with all the paper work, you may not be eligible. To be on time, consider using certified mail and/or return receipt. Be sure to use secured postal services.

Even after sending in your first application, keep applying for other scholarships. You’ll never know if your application was accepted or not, until later.

If you get your scholarship, be sure to thank your sponsors. Tell how much you appreciate the award and your career goals.

Go to the Financial Aid Office at your college or university. There are TONS of scholarships out there available to you that financial aid counselors can introduce you to. They will help you complete applications, and tell you how to meet the criteria for specific scholarships.

If you have chosen a major, talk to the head of the department. They usually have a list of scholarships designed especially for students majoring in a specific field.

Look on the web. Many search engines exist that find scholarships suited to you. A few to try are scholarship-listings.com, fastweb.com, scholarships.com, and scholarships4me.com. After signing up with these sites they provide an organized way to apply for scholarships. Many of them also offer other alternatives for receiving college money. You may also be interested in scholarships for women – a site that specializes in women, but has scholarships for BOTH genders.

See if your and/or your parent’s employer offers scholarships. Many companies offer tuition reimbursement for students who are employed or have a family member employed by their company.

Tips

Join a club, take up a hobby, participate in community events. There are a lot of scholarships that are based on what you do.

Don’t pass up a scholarship opportunity just because it requires you to write an essay. While many students do not enjoy writing essays, you may be passing up a great scholarship opportunity if you don’t buckle down and write.

Apply for any and every scholarship opportunity that comes your way, you never know what you might receive.

Warnings

Don’t ever pay a service to search for scholarships for you. The legitimate ones are free and you can always go to your financial aid office at school.

Scholarships come in many forms and types. There are those that are offer to some sectors of society, specific intellectual capacity, athletic excellence, and more. Meanwhile, there are also scholarships that are specifically designed to minorities. Scholarships for minorities are made to keep those little portions of the population educated even if the students cannot afford to pay for their education.

Here are the scholarships for minorities available:

Scholarships for Women

For the longest time, women have been one sector of the society with least purpose. Women throughout the history of humankind have been prohibited to study in schools, get a degree and a profession. Today, women have become more involved and more educated. Thanks to the contribution of those individuals to have made their collective moves to place women into the picture. Thanks also to scholarships provided for women that even the most underprivileged could study without worrying more of the expenses.

Scholarships for African Americans and Hispanics

Two of the most dominant minorities in the United States are the African Americans and the Hispanics. They are also two of the most favored portion of the American populace in terms of scholarships. Many colleges and universities, organizations, private individuals, and corporations are dedicated to provide financial aids to these two sectors of society.

Scholarships for Transgendered, Bisexual, Lesbian, and Gay

With more a liberal society, there are some institutions and organizations that recognize transgendered, bisexual, lesbian, and gay as legitimate part or the minority group. And these institutions and organizations provide scholarships for these mentioned minorities as help to keep them educated like others.

//-->

Scholarships for Native Americans

The original settlers of the country, the Native Americans, are given equal opportunities to study and finish college like the Whites, Blacks and Colored population in the country. Many institutions and organizations recognize the importance of giving education to Native Americans.

Scholarships for Disabled

There is special attention given to disabled students in order for them to study and get a degree even if they cannot walk normally or cannot do normal functions as a result of their disabilities. And with the Disabilities Act put into law, disabilities have never been a hindrance to enter schools and classrooms even if most would consider them as unusual.

Whether you are an African American, Hispanic, women, Native American, disabled, transgendered, bisexual, lesbian, or gay, you can get scholarship, study, and get a degree to become ready for the future.

If you have a child that will be graduating from high school, you most have explored financial aid options. You may be happy, and proud and somewhat relieved that your child is graduating. It is certainly a milestone in a teenager’s life to graduate. As a parent it is time to celebrate that your child has made it through high school, however, you may have mixed feelings about them leaving the nest and the financial burden of paying for college.

However high school graduation is not the end of the road. In fact, it is one stepping stone to possibly tougher challenges that are on the horizon in the succeeding years, obtaining a college degree.

You may have already thought about this but, it is time to get serious about how you are going to finance four years of college. At most colleges tuition fees and other fees are increasing.

You certainly need to plan ahead of time to avoid any problems, and to assure that your child has a smooth transition from high school into college. You will want to be financially prepared. It is best to start early, so that you are prepared, especially if any unexpected problems arise.

If you are or you think you may be faced with financial problems, it is important that you know that there are options available for your child. Take the time to read up on the subject so that you are familiar with the options that are available.

•Grants-You may have heard that there money available from the government as well as other agencies that you can apply for. You need to complete a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) form. Once the application has been completed, send it and it will be reviewed and if your child qualifies, he/she will be entitled to a stipend. At this point, you then need to provide the name of the college your child plans to attend.

•Scholarships- If your child is athletically inclined or has a very high grade point average or both, you may have the option to apply for scholarships. There are a multitude of scholarships available, you just need to take the time to explore your options. The scholarships available are for sports, community service scholarships, social service scholarships, and others.

•Student Loans- they are available and generally have lower interest rates then other types of loans. Sometimes the loans are subsidized, so that the interest does not start accruing until a student finishes college. And, collateral is not required so you do not have to use your home as collateral for the loan. Most of these loans are set up to have a variety of repayment options at low interest rates and low monthly payment options.

If you are a sporty person who fancies bowling and is desperate and determined enough to earn a college degree, you are in luck. There are actually a lot of bowling scholarships out there that you can take advantage of. As a high school bowler you should know that the standard of play at college level is very high. Remember that only the absolute top players will be approached with offers of bowling scholarships.

More than $6 million in scholarship money is offered each season by bowling associations and councils, certified tournaments and proprietors throughout the United States.

The United States Bowling Congress (USBC) for one, has quite a few programs. Here are a couple samples of the scholarships that the USBC offers:

The Gift for Life Scholarship

Every year, 12 scholarships of this kind are awarded to high school students who are financially incapable of attending college and getting a degree would be impossible. This scholarship (worth $1,000) will be given to each of the selected group of 6 boys and 6 girls. They should be a Grade 9-12 high school student, with a 2.0 GPA or higher, a current member of the USBC and should have not participated in any professional bowling tournament (not including professional amateur tournaments).

In commemoration of the heroes of the September 11 tragedy, two of The Gift of Life Scholarships shall be given to a child of a fireman, a police officer, or rescue personnel.

Who’s Who Sports Edition All-Academic Bowling Team

For this category, scholarship worth $1,000 shall be given away to about 20 high school students who are currently in their junior or senior year, have a 3.0 GPA or higher, are a current member of the USBC and have not participated in any professional bowling tournament (not including professional amateur tournaments). The 20 fortunate students who would qualify shall comprise a team. Aside from the scholarship, they shall also be given a special team award.

The criterion for selecting the All-Academic Bowling Team is based on the grades of each applicant, their commitment to their studies and the community, reference letters and an essay.

The United States Bowling Congress has a wealth of information at www.bowl.com/scholarships. I would encourage you to check the site to get more information on the programs available and participating colleges and universities. You may even download applications for a number of financial awards that are given out annually.

Although mostly smaller colleges offer bowling scholarships, there are some larger ones that also participate. Some of the colleges include:

Alabama A&M University in Huntsville, AL.

Calumet College of St. Joseph in Whiting, IN.

Delaware State University in Dover, DE.

Florida A&M University in Tallahassee, FL.

University of Houston in Houston, TX.

Jackson State University in Jackson, MS.

Ohio State University in Westerville, OH

While many readers are currently looking for financial aid for college in the near future, it is wise to start planning ahead for the long term. If you are currently a few years away from attending a university and enjoy bowling, you may just be able to finance all or part of your education with something you enjoy competing in now. Bowling scholarships are available, but they only go to the best of the best. I hope that is you!

Today more than ever, there are many scholarship opportunities available to students of African American descent. However, it can be a bit of a struggle to uncover these scholarships if you don’t know where to look. You may be frustrated at the seeming lack of opportunities – you may even feel like giving up. If you are serious about attending college and would like the opportunity to earn money to do so, you have to put in a little effort to find those hidden gems.

Take Initiative

Scholarships are not going to fall into your lap. As much as you might hate the process of searching for scholarships, you have to put in a bit of work to reap the rewards. This guide will aim to show you various scholarship opportunities for African American students, and how to find the ones that best suit your needs.

However, you are the one who ultimately must put in the legwork of rooting through the information and applying for the scholarships that interest you.

Scholarship Opportunities
Additionally, the scholarship can only be used to pay for books, room and board, college tuition and/or other educational fees. For a full list of requirements, please visit their website for more information.

United Negro College Fund

American Institute of Certified Public Accountants

The scholarship from AICPA encourages students to choose accounting as their major and help prepare them for entrance into accounting as a career. Visit their website for a full list of application requirements and eligibility guidelines.
